What is the Feynman Technique, and why does teaching something help you learn it?
Explain it simply, find the gaps, and close them
The Feynman Technique is a four-step loop: pick a concept, explain it in plain language as if teaching a beginner, notice exactly where the explanation breaks down, and go back to fill those gaps. It works because explaining forces you to generate and retrieve the material, which exposes the difference between recognizing an idea and actually understanding it.
Most people overestimate how well they understand something because the words look familiar on the page. The Feynman Technique attacks that illusion by making you produce the explanation yourself — the moment you stumble or reach for jargon is the moment you have found a real gap. Below are the core practices, each with the mechanism behind it and an honest read on the evidence.
The practices (6)
Producing an explanation from scratch is generative retrieval: you must reconstruct the idea and its connections rather than recognize them on a page. Aiming at a beginner strips away the jargon you might otherwise hide behind, so any gap in your own understanding becomes immediately visible.
- 1Pick one concept and write or say an explanation aimed at a curious 12-year-old.
- 2Talk it through out loud or to a real person rather than just thinking it.
- 3Note every point where you hesitate, hand-wave, or reach for a textbook phrase.
Explaining material to others (the protégé effect) and explaining it to yourself (self-explanation) both improve comprehension and retention in controlled studies, because they force active generation rather than passive review.
Honest caveat: The benefit comes from generating the explanation yourself; copying a clear explanation you found elsewhere does not produce the same effect.
